What Is a Shot Blasting Machine

Concept of Shot Blasting Machine

A shot blasting machine is a type of processing technology that uses a shot blaster to project steel grit or steel shots at high speed onto the surface of a material. Compared to other surface treatment technologies, it is faster, more effective, and can be used for parts of the casting process that need to be retained or stamped.

With the development of shot blasting machines, they have extended and expanded into many industries, such as removing tire marks at airports, removing old markings on municipal roads, roughening concrete and removing surface laitance, cleaning epoxy floors, rust removal on ship decks, waterproof shot blasting processes on bridge surfaces, and more. Mobile shot blasting machines, commonly referred to as road shot blasting machines, are used in these industries. Other extended industries include anti-corrosion rust removal shot blasting equipment for oil storage tanks, specialized shot blasting machines for stone surfaces, large steel pipe inner and outer wall shot blasting machines, etc. Since the invention of the shot blasting machine, these high-difficulty industries have been made convenient, saving manpower and simplifying the work process.

Most Popular Types of Shot Blasting Machines

Rubber belt shot blasting machine: This type of machine is suitable for surface rust removal or shot peening of various types of medium and large batch production workpieces. The workpieces must be able to withstand collisions and must weigh less than 50kg in the rubber belt shot blasting machine. This machine can be used as a standalone unit or in a production line; it falls under the category of casting machinery.

Working Principle: The workpiece is placed in a rubber belt drum, the belt moves forward, and the workpiece continuously rolls. The shot blaster projects steel shots at high speed and uniformly onto the rolling workpiece's surface. The steel shots flow through holes in the belt into a screw conveyor, then are transported to a bucket elevator, lifted to a separator for separation, and dust is sucked into a dust collector by a fan where it is filtered. Clean air is discharged into the atmosphere, and the dust on the filter bag is mechanically vibrated into a collection box which the user can periodically clean. Waste sand flows out through a waste pipe and can be reused by the user. The shot and sand mixture is collected back into the equipment body, separated by the separator, and the clean shots are used again by the shot blaster to treat the workpieces. This machine is suitable for cleaning and strengthening small castings, forgings, stampings, gears, springs, etc., especially parts that are susceptible to collisions. It is very suitable for rust removal and pre-treatment of fasteners.

Hook Shot Blasting Machine: The hook shot blasting machine is a standard model of shot blasting cleaning machine with a working cylinder diameter of 900 to 1300mm and a height of 1300 to 2200mm. Standard models have 2-7 blasting heads and a maximum load capacity of up to 10,000 kg. This type of shot blasting machine has high production efficiency, a wide range of flexibility, ideal for cleaning and strengthening equipment, and is simple to operate. Simply load the workpiece onto the machine, press start, and within a short time (usually 5-7 minutes), the entire cleaning process is completed, removing all dust and residual shots. It is mainly suitable for the surface treatment of various medium to large castings, forgings, weldments, heat-treated parts, including fragile and irregularly shaped workpieces.

Working Principle:

When the machine is operational, once the preparatory work (dust removal system, elevator, screw conveyor, etc.) is completed, the machine starts to work normally. First, the hook descends to lift the workpiece, ascends to a certain position, and then moves along the rail into the shot blasting chamber. When it reaches the predetermined position, it stops and starts rotating. At this time, the shot blasting chamber door is closed, the shot blaster is opened, and the shot supply gate is opened, beginning the shot blasting cleaning of the workpiece. This process is repeated until the work is completed, and the machine is stopped in sequence.

Roller Conveyor Shot Blasting Machine:

The roller conveyor shot blasting machine provides an unmatched cost-performance ratio and is the ideal cleaning equipment. Mechanical rust removal with shot blasting machines has been recognized and widely applied in production. The equipment combination system makes the process reliable, economical, and ensures the required cleanliness of the workpiece. The shot blasting system is highly automated and equipped with user-specified loading and unloading units. The whole system can function as standalone equipment or be integrated into production lines for rust removal and anti-corrosion treatment.

Simple design, meeting production line requirements;

Improvement of continuous production processes;

Short transport distance (no intermediate product storage);

Since the shot blasting process is integrated into the entire automated production line, operating costs are significantly reduced;

Working Principle: The roller conveyor shot blasting machine is easy to operate. Simply load the steel material onto the machine, press the start button, and after a short cycle period, the system automatically unloads the processed material, completing the entire cleaning process and removing all dust and residual shots. The roller conveyor shot blasting machine can be integrated with other operations such as sawing, drilling, milling, painting, and drying systems to offer customers a complete processing solution. Additionally, it can be equipped with conveyor chains and cross-transfer systems to further enhance productivity.

Diverse Types of Shot Blasting Machines

Rotary Table Shot Blasting Machine: Mainly suitable for batch production of surface cleaning of small and medium-sized workpieces. This specification of equipment is suitable for engine connecting rods, gears, disc springs, etc., widely used in the casting and automobile manufacturing industries. It features high production efficiency, good sealing effect, compact structure, easy loading and unloading, and high technical content.

Steel Plate Pre-treatment Line Shot Blasting Machine: A multifunctional steel pre-treatment line for cleaning welded structures, H-beams, profiles, trusses, and steel plates. The layout of the shot blaster is multi-angled, using the world's advanced single-disk high-efficiency shot blaster that shoots high-speed, dense shot bundles. These strike various parts of the original state steel simultaneously, achieving three-dimensional, comprehensive cleaning. This process quickly removes rust, welding slag, scale, and other contaminants, providing a certain roughness and clean surface. This improves the adhesion of paint films to the steel surface, enhances the steel's fatigue strength and corrosion resistance, improves intrinsic quality, and extends its service life.

Wire Mesh Belt Shot Blasting Machine: Suitable for cleaning disc-shaped, plate-shaped, castings, bodies, and structural parts. It can apply powerful shot blast treatment to the raw steel and cast surface, removing rust, welding slag, and scale to achieve a uniform metallic sheen, improving coating quality and anti-corrosion effects. Mainly used in the automotive, aerospace, railway, and mechanical manufacturing industries. The continuous wire mesh belt shot blasting machine is designed and built to allow parts to pass through automatically and continuously, receiving multidirectional shot blast cleaning. Swivel shot heads maximize shot blasting efficiency and prevent parts from colliding and damaging during the process.

The Cylinder Inner Wall Shot Blasting Machine uses shot blasting technology to clean the inner wall of cylinders. It is a new type of inner cylinder wall shot blasting cleaner that primarily uses compressed air as the power source. The shot blast is accelerated to generate a certain kinetic energy and is sprayed onto the inner wall of the cylinder. When the cylinder is positioned in the shot blasting chamber, the shot gun automatically extends into each cylinder and moves up and down to complete the comprehensive cleaning of the inner wall. This is an optimal choice for the gas cylinder industry.

The Overhead Rail Shot Blasting Machine is suitable for mass shot blast treatment of medium and small workpieces. Workpieces move continuously or stepwise along with the overhead rail or use an advanced accumulation push-type overhead rail working system, making workpieces stop in the loading and unloading zone and the shot blasting zone, realizing precise loading and unloading and shot blast processes. Hook load capacity ranges from 50 to 2000 kg, featuring high production efficiency, reliable operation, and excellent cleaning results for complex surface and internal structures like engine blocks, cylinder heads, motor housings, etc. It is an ideal choice for industries such as automobiles, tractors, diesel engines, motors, and valves. The overhead rail shot blasting machine can be categorized into continuous, stepwise, and accumulation types based on the movement method of the overhead rail. Based on the arrangement of the overhead rail, it can be classified into single-travel, dual-travel, and multi-travel types.

Road Shot Blasting Machine: The working principle is to mechanically propel the shot material (steel shots or sand grains) at high speeds and specific angles onto the work surface. The shot material impacts the work surface, and then, through the airflow cleaning mechanism of a vacuum cleaner, the shot material and the dislodged impurities are separated and recycled, enabling the shot material to be reused. The machine is equipped with a dust collector, ensuring dust-free, pollution-free operation, improving efficiency and protecting the environment.

Functions of Shot Blasting Machine:
